Hi, I’m Miranda and it’s my job to make the Salmon Youth Centre a place where all young people can come and enjoy themselves – even if they have a disability that they think might make this difficult.
To start with, we have a specific Youth club for young people who have a disability and are aged 14+ (Friday, 3.30-5.30pm). In the club we do a range of activities (e.g. sport, games, drama, music, computers) and projects (e.g. making a DVD and volunteering at the Bermondsey Carnival).
As well as the clubs specifically for young people who have a disability, our whole programme of activities are available to you (see programme). Many of our staff have experience of working with young people who have a disability and we can arrange extra support to access sessions if you need it. We are also hoping to set up a parent and carer’s room on Saturday nights to support young people who have a disability to access the general 14+ session that happens between 8-10pm.
RESIDENTIALS AND TRIPS
We go on trips to places like Thorpe Park and 10 pin bowling. This year we are hoping to go on our first two summer residential holidays which are specifically for young people who have a disability.
Connect2 is a new scheme which pairs up young people who have a disability with trained volunteers who take them out into the local community. As well as having fun and getting out and about, it is hoped that this scheme will help improve young people’s confidence and independence skills.
If you have any questions regarding our work with young people who have a disability please get in contact with me.
