Gap Year Students (Gappers) are often selected because they are not in education, training or employment and are struggling to change their situation; they may have learning difficulties, be a young parent, or have a criminal record.
Gappers spend thirty-five hours a week for up to nine months at Salmon, spending twenty hours gaining experience in youth work, and fifteen hours training for a qualification; usually Foundation Studies in Youth Work. This gives them access to higher education which they previously would not have had, or it leads to the start of a career in youth work.
Out of the first 28 young people to become Gappers, 82% completed the course, and 79% have gone on to higher education or better jobs.
"My experience at Salmon will help me to build up my CV so that when I’m done, hopefully, I can go into youth work, catering or do something else. If Salmon was not here, I would be reoffending again, go back to prison, or get killed. I thank Salmon today because I don’t know what would have happened to me if I didn’t know Salmon."
