Health Advice

‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’ is the motto for the health provision at the Salmon Youth Centre and our aim is to enable every young person who comes into the centre to possess both! 

We achieve this by:

• Ensuring health is on the agenda of every session held at the Salmon Youth Centre. 
• Empowering every young person who visits the centre to be serious about their own health & make healthy decisions.
• Enabling young people to access information that will inform their own opinions and choices. 

With statistics showing that Southwark has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and obesity in the country, it would seem that the young people of Southwark are not accessing the advice, information and guidance they need to make safe choices regarding their health.  Inequalities when it comes to accessing quality health provision are widely recognised as an important problem both nationally and internationally, so in the 17^th most deprived borough in the country, the health work here at Salmon is committed to being fully engaged with local government policy, statutory organisations and local multi-agency initiatives to improve the health of young people, reducing the gap between the most and least disadvantaged. 

The health promotion work at Salmon includes:

• Closed group work
• Workshops in open sessions
• Key working
• Counselling provision
• Sports & fitness sessions
• Outside speakers
• A wide range of free health related literature
• Free contraception
• A drop-in clinic and
• Taster sessions...  all on a range of health issues.

This work really does have the potential to improve the physical and mental health among young people not only now but for the rest of their lives.
