As part of the SKN Project where we are aiming to improve young people's speaking & listening skills, we took five of our young people to the Grand Final of the Jack Petchey SpeakOut Challenge, earlier this year. Here Joseph (pictured bottom right), shares why he went on the trip and what he got out of it:

"I wanted to go on the SpeakOut Challenge final trip, because of my great interest in politics. I am seriously considering going into politics after doing a History/History and Politics (joint honours) degree from university.

To go into frontline politics - or in fact, most lines of politics - the ability to speak in public is very important and therefore going on this trip was very appropriate. I haven’t done any Public Speaking and therefore being at the SpeakOut Challenge final gave me a taste of how people spoke in front of a large crowd.

I found the evening to be very inspiring and encouraging as I considered that many of the young people on stage never considered that they would have the confidence or ability to speak in such an interesting, funny and clear way in front of over 1,000 people.

I particularly liked one speech where someone spoke with real passion against corporate greed, as it resonated with my views and gave a clear message in a way that I think would have made people think. Being at the evening has really fanned my burning desire to speak in public like many of the young people did that evening."
