Our Training & Enterprise Department looks to provide training opportunities for young people, including those who are disengaged, those who are not in education, employment or training, and those trying to start their own business. We also provide weekly study sessions for young people wanting further support with their homework. The department’s cooperation with Salmon’s arts, sport and youth work teams offer young people a variety of learning opportunities and make training at Salmon accessible to everyone.

1. Alternative Curriculum – for those who are disengaged
We work with local schools, colleges and Pupil Referral Units in Southwark and offer an alternative curriculum for disengaged young pupils who struggle to get to grips with learning in the structured school environment. For more information, go to our page for schools.

2. Inclusion work – for those not in education, employment or training
Besides working with schools and colleges in the area, the Salmon Youth Centre also works with young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET). This aspect of our work is called ‘Inclusion work’. For each of the young people involved we provide a tailor-made programme, including:

  • Working towards employment
  • CV writing
  • Job searching
  • College applications
  • Prepare the young people for work, through AQAs and mock interview training
  • Helping young people source work experience placements

To be able to equip young people to gain employment or training opportunities, we also support them in their personal development. We do this through befriending, mentoring, support and advice, individual action plans and goal setting.

3. Young entrepreneurs
We have purpose built office suites to offer space to budding, young entrepreneurs and support them to start their own business. We help them to create business plans, look at their finances and signpost them to other organisations that can help them to develop their business.

"Thanks to Salmon, I am getting the opportunities to do things that will make me a better person. I have taken part in different courses, and managed to get in to part-time employment and do a work placement. All this helps me to gain experience so that I can get a better job in the future." Vicky Razzell, Gap-year Student
