We encourage young people to take responsibility and give them the opportunity to volunteer in sessions. Volunteering gives young people self-esteem, confidence, empowerment and a sense of responsibility, as they take a lead in advocating for their peers and help provide the youth service they want to see.
Volunteering opportunities are tailored to fit individual young people, who choose which age group and activities to get involved with, which qualifications to aim for, and how much time they are able to commit to volunteering. Salmon is committed to meeting young people where they are at – for many of the young volunteers, just turning up once a week for a couple of hours is a huge achievement! As they grow in confidence and ability, young volunteers are entrusted with more and more responsibility.
Young volunteers play a vital part in enabling others to make the most of Salmon’s incredible facilities. But they also play a much more significant role – and one that adult volunteers and staff struggle with: empowering the young people who come to Salmon. Young volunteers give the young people in Bermondsey proof that it is possible to be young and from a working class background, and still make a success of your life, help others and make a difference in the community.
